Now we have to set the date.
Some would like to do it early, some late. So I will throw a date out.
How does Jan 29 -31, 2010 look to everyone? Arrive Friday, meet at the O'club drinks & dinner?
Please review the recall roster on the blog at:
And send some more photos - I will keep posting them

"Either place is fine with me, but I would prefer Pensacola. In addition to the Naval Air Museum, Pensacola has a great officer's club. The conference center, which is only about three blocks from the club might be a good place to book rooms. The O-6quarters are big enough to play tennis in. No telling what kind of suite they would give Drew for a hospitality suite. If that turns out to be the will of the Det., I would be glad to make the arrangements. I have dealt with the conference center many times in the past. BTW Craig, I don't think the address you have for Lynn works. If anyone has a better one, I would love to have it. Semper fi,WILKES
John, Craig Wood who lives nearby will be glad to help.

Not sure that I can make it in January and certainly don’t want that to disrupt the operation. I learned over the years that this group knows better than any other how to plot out the operation plan…
Anyway, I’m keeping a careful watch on what is happening. I already have trips scheduled out into January and am just waiting for confirmation on those plans. Someone suggested an update from everyone and perhaps that is in order. We all know we lost Scott Swaim not too long ago and most of you remember old Gunny Roger Muelling who was laid to rest early this year.
Since I retired in 2000 I have completed my undergrad degree in business, completed an MBA and am currently enrolled in a doctoral program…this all sort of took up the “spare” time I had been using for weekend drills etc. I still work full time for Taylor Freezer – now a subsidiary of Carrier – a United Technology company. I also teach marketing at the undergrad level at Rockford College in Rockford, Illinois.
I haven’t run 3 miles since I retired but suspect I can still pass the PFT. I am on Facebook as Jim Homan can tell you in case anyone hasn’t seen my ugly mug for awhile. What’s up with all of you?

Good to hear from you, Clarence. I see that you are a high tech guy, and you and I and Homan are now Facebook buddies. If any of you old grunts want to sign on facebook, you can become high tech cutting edge people like we are.
Impressive that you are Professor almost a PHD Master Gunnery Sergeant. And I am pretty sure I could not run a PFT.
You better come to the Florida reunion, or you will be UA.
We can put lots of info and photos on the blog - it is free and easy enough that even an officer can do it. Anyone who wants to post their story or photos ask me, and I will get you signed up. Or you can send me your story and photos, and I will post. You can see what we have been doing with one of my old Vietnam units at:

Drill Report Washington DC June 6-9, 2008
On Saturday we enjoyed a great brunch at the home of Margaret and Drew Davis. Then we visited the new Marine Corps Museum at Quantico. Very impressive, especially for the displays that showed us as Museum Pieces.
We enjoyed dinner and drinks at various establishments. Only the aviators peformed a virtual reality Dead Bug:
Attendees included:
Drew and Margaret Davis
Jim & June Homan
Ron & Linda Wozniak
Larry Woods
Craig & Phyllis Wood
Will & Mrs. Holohan
Craig & Beth Hullinger
Lynn Wardlow
Larry & Mrs. Anderson
George & Mrs. Braun
Did I forget anyone? If so, I apologize. It is tough getting old and senile.
All those who did not attend were UA, missed the movement, and will be receiving orders for both Vietnam and Iraq. Better attend the next drill, or else.

Dress Code for the 8th & I Drill
Then dress code is as follows:
Things aren’t nearly as “dressed up” as they used to be…
Summer dress/ sandals etc
Sheath dress/ flowered dress/ linen etc…..
Remember that you will be on grass
(or maybe not….now that it is in the band hall) so shoes need to be appropriate….
in other words…no spikey heels on grass….you get stuck.
You see everything……very few women in suits etc……
No cocktail dresses etc…..
Subject: UNIFORM OF THE DAY - 8th & IDate: Mon, 19 May 2008 07:41:00 -0400From: "Col William Holahan" <WHolahan@roa.org>To: "Laurence Woods" <laurencew@ameritech.net>
Larry I thought it appropriate to let everyone know that there is no expectation that DET-4 alumni should "try to strap it on one more time"!! In fact that would be inappropriate unless they all are still in SMCR drill status AND meet current height, weight and grooming standards, which I'm betting they do not !!
Secondly the appropriate uniform for retired doesn't cover the full range of USMC uniforms and is limited to dress uniforms for Marine Corps Balls, etc. As this isn't a Ball. Civilian attire can be coat and tie, or golf shirt and dress slacks and for our ladies equivalent feminine attire will suffice.
The invitation reads "civilian informal" so I'd read that as "County Club casual". We are going to be at a reception before the parade and I wouldn't want to be too casual. If we were only going to the parade then we all could be quite casual.
Remember it is usually quite muggy here in DC so dress comfortably.

Drill Dates June 6-8, 2008 in DC
7 April 2008
From: The Original Boondoggle Planning Officer
To: Former Members/Spouses/Guests and Friends of Headquarter Detachment 4,
4th Marine Division, FMF
Subj: Voluntary Recall Order to a Very Unofficial Drill
Should you accept this order, you and your spouse/guest are obligated to find and pay your own way to the general Washington, DC, area of operation for the inclusive period of Friday, 6 June 2008 through Sunday, 8 June 2008. The purpose of such unofficial duty is solely to reunite with those former members and friends of Chicago’s very own Headquarters Detachment 4, 4th Marine Division, FMF, and have a “ball!”
Planned events in support of this directive are as follows:
(1). Attend the Marine Forces Reserve and Toys for Tots Recognition Sunset Parade at Marine Barracks, 8th & I St SE, Washington, DC, at 1900, Friday, 6 June, 2008.
(2). Attend such other post parade events on 6 June as requested by the senior Marine present at the conclusion of the parade.
(3). Attend brunch at the residence of MGen AB Davis, 2801 27th St North, Arlington, VA at 1000, Saturday, 7 June 2008.
(4). Transport self and others and/or be transported with others to Marine Corps Base, Quantico, VA., at 1300, Saturday, 7 June 2008, to inspect and review such authorized programs as may be offered at the Marine Corps Museum, Quantico, VA. One may also choose to visit various Marine souvenir/uniform shops/Camp Barrett in the Quantico area.
(5). An informal Saturday evening dinner is planned (site and time to be announced) within the area theater of operation and then return to Holiday Inn-Rosslyn.
(6). For those interested in a Sunday golf outing, please advise Will Holahan (wholahan@roa.org) of your interest. If enough are interested he will set-up.
To properly execute this order, please pay particular attention to the details provided below:
1). Arrive (at your own risk) in Washington, DC by 1600, Friday, 6 June 2008. There are several on-line reservation opportunities in the $180-$220 range for commercial R/T air service from the Chicago area to Reagan National Airport (DCA). Reagan is preferred and is the best and only arrival site for DC Metro service (Blue Line to Rosslyn Station) to hotel. Dulles and BWI will require POV.
2). Reserve your own room at the Holiday Inn-Rosslyn, 1900 North Fort Myer Drive, Arlington, VA. Twenty rooms have been blocked only until 9 May 2008 at the rate of $89 per night plus a 10.25% tax for the period 06/06/08 – 06/08/08. In addition there are 10 rooms blocked for Sunday night departing on 06/09/08 for those interested in DC tourism/golf on Sunday. Toll Free reservation number is 1-800-368-3408. Use Promotion code “DTF.” Local Holiday Inn contact is Ms. Jessica Quiroa at 1-703-807-2000. Please note: If not taking DC Metro Blue Line, hotel is located across Key Bridge from Georgetown and directly across Lee Highway from Marriott-Key Bridge.
3). Departure from this operational theater is at your own call on Sunday or Monday depending on your personal schedule. For planning purposes, please advise Will Holahan (wholahan@roa.org) and Larry Woods (laurencew@ameritech.net) via e-mail (1) upon making your reservations, (2) the number in your party, (3) if you forward this e-mail to those former members/friends of HqDet 4 not shown as addressees on this e-mail and (4) if you will have a POV on site.
A final instruction regarding Professional Conduct: (1) Aviators will not be allowed to do “carrier quals” in restaurants/bars. (2) Grunts will not be allowed to run the “O” course in restaurants/bars. (3) Conducting traditional “deceased insect” ceremonial rights in public facilities without paramedics present during this tour of duty is not authorized! Best Regards and SEMPER FI!

How does this date work for all hands? Location Washington DC or Quantico

Lt. Gen Jack Bergman's 8th and I parade is Friday 30 May. He said our group will be invited to the reception and have reserved seating if we want. Does that date work? We could have brunch at our house then go to the Museum on Saturday.
