______________

Charles Wesley “Chuck” Furbee III, age 81, passed away on Saturday, July 29, 2023, at home with family at his side. He was born on May 14, 1942, to Charles Wesley Furbee, Jr. and Lydia Louise (nee Shoup) Furbee in Mount Pleasant, Michigan.

When Chuck was four years old, his family returned to their hometown in Clarksburg, West Virginia, where he graduated from Washington Irving High School in 1960. He graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan College in 1964 with a degree in economics and was a member of the championship football team and two championship tennis teams. At his graduation ceremony, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps.

After attending The Basic School in Quantico, Virginia from 1964 to 1965, Chuck shipped out to Vietnam in August of 1965, returning to the United States in August of 1966 where he completed his active-duty service at Camp Pendleton in Southern California. It was at this time that he met his wife, Linda, whom he married on August 10, 1968, in her hometown of Boulder, Colorado.

Chuck then began his civilian career in Chicago at Chicago Title & Trust Company in Human Resources from 1968 to 1974, subsequently moving to the Kissell Company, a mortgage banking firm, in Springfield, Ohio. In 1977, he returned to Chicago as Assistant Vice President in Human Resources at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. He was promoted to Vice President in 1980 and Senior Vice President in 1981, responsible for Support Services. In 1985, he assumed responsibility for Bank Operations in Chicago, Des Moines, Indianapolis, and Milwaukee, adding the Peoria satellite facility in 1996. During this time, he continued his Marine Corps service as a member of the Reserves, he earned a master’s degree in Industrial Relations from Loyola University Chicago, and he completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard University.

Chuck retired as a Colonel from the United States Marine Corps in 1991 and from the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago in 2004. After doing consulting work for a few years, he was asked by Federal regulators to assume the position of CEO of a Corporate Federal Credit Union that was financially distressed. Chuck and his management team implemented a plan that recapitalized the institution, creating the new entity, Alloya Corporate Federal Credit Union. At the time of Chuck’s final retirement on June 30, 2013, Alloya was the largest financial institution of its kind in the country. As Chuck said, “It was a pretty good last dance.”

Chuck is survived by his wife, Diane Noble Furbee; his children Nicole (Zak) Jarrell; Charles Wesley “Chad” Furbee IV (Traci) Furbee; Carly (Christopher) Williams; and grandchildren Owen, Emerson, Eli, and Xavier Jarrell; Charles Wesley “Charlie” Furbee V and Cameron Furbee; and Tyson and Roman Williams, all of Naperville.
