We have lost a fine Marine and Det-4 Member

Kankakee County Circuit Judge J. Scott Swaim, 62, died suddenly from a massive heart attack Sunday morning.

Swaim, a life-long Kankakee County resident, has served as a judge, attorney, community leader and a lieutenant colonel in the Marine Corps during his lifetime. His family, friends and colleagues remember him as a hard worker who valued service to his community. But above all else, he is remembered as a friend.

"It is going to be really hard to walk into the courthouse Monday," said Chris Bohlen, Kankakee city attorney and one of Swaim's friends.

Life of law

Swaim was first appointed associate judge in 2003.

As a judge, he covered general traffic and juvenile courts, and most recently the aggravated traffic call, including jury DUI cases.

Kankakee County Circuit Chief Judge Kathy Bradshaw-Elliot said Swaim was an exceptional judge who thoughtfully listened to cases. "He worked tirelessly, and he was the first judge we'd turn to when we needed coverage and help," she said. "He never turned us down."

The appointment to the bench, which he sought for nearly a decade, followed a long legal career as a court-appointed children's advocate, attorney for the Kankakee County Building Commission, and as a private practitioner for many years as a partner in his father's law firm.

"Both as a judge and as an attorney, he had high expectations for himself and others," Bohlen said. "He had a great sense of humor and a tough exterior, but a lot of compassion."

His military experience was also apparent on the bench.

As a Marine Corps leader, Swaim commanded 10 officers and about 250 men in the Marine Corps reserves, where he served for more than two decades after being on active duty in the service.

"That Marine background showed up in his demeanor in the court room," Bohlen said. "He was no nonsense when he was on the bench."

Local boy

Swaim's life of leadership began when he was young.

Growing up, Swaim was a youth member and leader of the Kankakee Area YMCA. Later, he served on the YMCA's board of directors for 23 years as president, and as a trustee, a position he had to relinquish when taking the bench.

"He gained a lot of confidence and leadership in the Y, and that was supported later on when he was elected to serve in different capacities," said Wes Walker, retired YMCA executive director.

Swaim graduated from Kankakee High School in 1964 with an obvious range of talents, but always opted to remain local, serving the community until the end of his life.

Bohlen said Swaim always took pride in the area and sought frequently to return some of what he'd gotten from it. "He was proud of this community and pleased with the chance to give back," Bohlen said.

Saying good-bye

Both Walker and Bohlen said Swaim meant many different things to people because he was involved in such a variety of roles in the community. But to them, most of all, he was a great friend. "When Scott was your friend, that was the end of it -- he was your friend," Walker said.

Swaim's wake will be held at Clancy-Gernon Funeral Home, at 295 Main St. NW,  in Bourbonnais, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at College Church of the Nazarene at Olivet Nazarne University, 200 University Ave., in Bourbonnais, with a one-hour visitation prior.

Scott Swaim was a fine Marine officer and a member of Det-4. He died far too young.

Drill Report Washington DC June 6-9, 2008

A good time was had by all at the Drill Weekend June 6-9, 2008. We attended a reception and the Silent Drill at 8th and I. Our thanks to General Jack Bergman. Very impressive. Generals Bergman and Davis looked good in their uniforms, and the Det Members looked OK in civilian clothes. The wifes looked great.

On Saturday we enjoyed a great brunch at the home of Margaret and Drew Davis. Then we visited the new Marine Corps Museum at Quantico. Very impressive, especially for the displays that showed us as Museum Pieces.

We enjoyed dinner and drinks at various establishments. Only the aviators peformed a virtual reality Dead Bug:

Things aren’t nearly as “dressed up” as they used to be…

Summer dress/ sandals etc

Sheath dress/ flowered dress/ linen etc…..

Remember that you will be on grass

(or maybe not….now that it is in the band hall) so shoes need to be appropriate….

in other words…no spikey heels on grass….you get stuck.

You see everything……very few women in suits etc……

No cocktail dresses etc…..

Larry I thought it appropriate to let everyone know that there is no expectation that DET-4 alumni should "try to strap it on one more time"!! In fact that would be inappropriate unless they all are still in SMCR drill status AND meet current height, weight and grooming standards, which I'm betting they do not !!

Secondly the appropriate uniform for retired doesn't cover the full range of USMC uniforms and is limited to dress uniforms for Marine Corps Balls, etc. As this isn't a Ball. Civilian attire can be coat and tie, or golf shirt and dress slacks and for our ladies equivalent feminine attire will suffice.

The invitation reads "civilian informal" so I'd read that as "County Club casual". We are going to be at a reception before the parade and I wouldn't want to be too casual. If we were only going to the parade then we all could be quite casual.

Remember it is usually quite muggy here in DC so dress comfortably.

Subj: Voluntary Recall Order to a Very Unofficial Drill

Should you accept this order, you and your spouse/guest are obligated to find and pay your own way to the general Washington, DC, area of operation for the inclusive period of Friday, 6 June 2008 through Sunday, 8 June 2008. The purpose of such unofficial duty is solely to reunite with those former members and friends of Chicago’s very own Headquarters Detachment 4, 4^th Marine Division, FMF, and have a “ball!”

Planned events in support of this directive are as follows:

(1). Attend the Marine Forces Reserve and Toys for Tots Recognition Sunset Parade at Marine Barracks, 8^th & I St SE, Washington, DC, at 1900, Friday, 6 June, 2008.

(2). Attend such other post parade events on 6 June as requested by the senior Marine present at the conclusion of the parade.

(3). Attend brunch at the residence of MGen AB Davis, 2801 27^th St North, Arlington, VA at 1000, Saturday, 7 June 2008.

(4). Transport self and others and/or be transported with others to Marine Corps Base, Quantico, VA., at 1300, Saturday, 7 June 2008, to inspect and review such authorized programs as may be offered at the Marine Corps Museum, Quantico, VA. One may also choose to visit various Marine souvenir/uniform shops/Camp Barrett in the Quantico area.

(5). An informal Saturday evening dinner is planned (site and time to be announced) within the area theater of operation and then return to Holiday Inn-Rosslyn.

(6). For those interested in a Sunday golf outing, please advise Will Holahan (wholahan@roa.org) of your interest. If enough are interested he will set-up.

To properly execute this order, please pay particular attention to the details provided below:

1). Arrive (at your own risk) in Washington, DC by 1600, Friday, 6 June 2008. There are several on-line reservation opportunities in the $180-$220 range for commercial R/T air service from the Chicago area to Reagan National Airport (DCA). Reagan is preferred and is the best and only arrival site for DC Metro service (Blue Line to Rosslyn Station) to hotel. Dulles and BWI will require POV.

2). Reserve your own room at the Holiday Inn-Rosslyn, 1900 North Fort Myer Drive, Arlington, VA. Twenty rooms have been blocked only until 9 May 2008 at the rate of $89 per night plus a 10.25% tax for the period 06/06/08 – 06/08/08. In addition there are 10 rooms blocked for Sunday night departing on 06/09/08 for those interested in DC tourism/golf on Sunday. Toll Free reservation number is 1-800-368-3408. A final instruction regarding Professional Conduct: (1) Aviators will not be allowed to do “carrier quals” in restaurants/bars. (2) Grunts will not be allowed to run the “O” course in restaurants/bars. Next Reunion - Thinking about a reunion for Det 4 in 2008

Australia / New Zealand

CAN I TRAVEL SPACE-A TO AUSTRALIA OR NEW ZEALAND?

Yes, but not easy.

Australia Option 1:  There are typically 4 flights per month (As of March 2015) from Travis AFB through Hickam, Hawaii and sometimes Andersen, Guam to RAAF Base Richmond (near Sydney). Occasionally, flights return to the US from Richmond via Christchurch, NZ. Normally, these flights have few seats available, so while possible, it is difficult to get on the run to Richmond; however, returning from Richmond to the USA is often easier.

Australia Option 2:  Space-A to Yokota and then Space-A to Singapore (3 weekly) and then use commercial air from Singapore to Darwin (about $100 or less one way) or Perth (about $200 one way).

Australia Option 3:  Space-A to Hawaii and then check fares on JETSTAR Airlines from Honolulu to Sydney (just under $400 one way).

NOTE:  All foreigners entering Australia are required to obtain visas Australia Electronic Travel Authority (ETA). In addition, upon leaving Australia you must pay $55 AUD cash (as of March 2015) to its Customs and Border agents.

New Zealand:  Space-A to Hawaii and then try for a "rare" mission to Christchurch or try commercial from Australia.

Det-4 Reunion 2005

A good time was had by all at the first Det-4 Reunion held at the Chicago Hilton on August 13, 2005. To the best of my knowledge no one passed out, was arrested or indicted. Dead Bug and Carrier Quals remained in virtual reality. A virtual reality Steelthrust was conducted - the tested unit passed.

Everyone noticed that everyone else had gotten older. Everyone fit the required height and weight limits and looked good in uniform. No one failed the PFT. Everyone got outstanding on their fitness reports, except Zimmer and Swaim, who had to be rousted out of the rack and induced to attend at the last minute through a combination of threats and blandishments.

Four spouses attended, and were a welcome addition. This did not cut into anyones carousing time since the wives departed by 2030, but no one had enough energy to carouse anyway.

A number of us have retired, and started with new companies or started our own businesses. Retiring early and often was a recurring effort. Swaim is a Judge and Wardlow a State Representative, the rest are titans of business and industry.

We discussed Steelthrust, and the possibility of starting a small part time consulting firm where we would exercise a Battalion using Steelthrust Lite, a prototype Steelthrust war game. We have a good track record in conducting these exercises, and it would be interesting to get them going again, perhaps initially on a volunteer basis.

Former Det CO's Magilligan and Barney will call the date and location for the next reunion. We debated whether it was best to have one every year, or every 3 to 5 years. Arguments for fewer reunions mean that everyone will try harder to get there. This is not a democracy - the CO's decide.

Next time everyone will make a strong effort to get everyone there. Virtual reality punishments for non attendance will be increased.

Sir, Good to hear from friends of Det-4. I am sorry to say I will miss this particular drill, and as far as the penalty for missing drill, you're too late for I am already activated and playing in the big sandbox as we speak. I try and stay in touch with MGySgt Harper as much as I can, it looks like I'll be here through mid October. Sounds like I'll miss one heck of a good time, wish I could be there, please have a drink on me! I hope the turn out is a great one, you'll have to let me know how it went. Tell all the Marines from the Det I said hello and give them a big SEMPER FI from the 1stSgt.

First of all, Thanks for establishing this roster. The note George Braun sent the other day really captures the essence of how I felt about seeing everyone on Saturday, but I would like to add my two cents worth. Mitch had his own way of demonstrating and expressing his enthusiasm, but we all know he was an inspiration to each of us as our career with the USMCR developed. His demise, even though the process was unmercifully drawn out, is a clear message to all of us 60 (+/-) year old warriors that we are not invincible! Your idea of a reunion is a great idea and even though I have become a tea totler, I look forward to being one of the liars.

Nice to see the Det-4 members at General Waters funeral. Sorry it was such a sad occasion.

We should probably do a reunion drill weekend sometime. Date and time are open. I am thinking KISS. Just meet at a hotel bar one Saturday night, drink, and tell lies. In other words, a typical drill weekend.

I didn't think that after almost a year of getting used to the idea of the world without Mitch that Saturday's service would get to me. Wrong. I'd like to think that I could inspire someone like George Conn to say those kind of things when I leave this vale but I know better. As a LtCol we all knew how he could lead. He had us drilling 2-3 times a month getting ready for Bold Guard, once for pay. The Chaplain talked about the true friends in life that it makes no difference that you don't see 'em very often. That was Mitch Waters. I'm so grateful that I went out to see him a couple of times this last year. He would have done it for me. S/F loa

P.S. It took something like this to get all of us together. It was good to see you guys too.

He was a Marine's Marine, and we lost a great asset. Always inspirational and motivating, I'm sure the PLCs, NROTC and OCS candidates, who attended the Chicago Future Officer Mess Nights, were influenced by his leadership. I know I was.

P.S. If you happen to plan a reunion around the 4th of July this year, I will be in the Chicagoland area for the birth of my daughter Julie's second child, and my grandson Nicholas Wozniak's 1st Birthday. Yes, thanks to my son Ron, there will be more Wozniaks!
Hawaii would be a great location for a reunion, and I'd be glad to set it up, if anyone was interested. Anyone interested? It would certainly be a non-KISS event. Always wanted to do something like that around the Pro Bowl, but for the second year in a row I'll be in the ROK instead.
