Vietnam War 50th Anniversary

IMMEDIATE RELEASE No. 037-11 January 14, 2011

DOD Announces Vietnam War 50th Anniversary Commemoration Program The Department of Defense announced today its program to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. The program will: - Thank and honor veterans of the Vietnam War, including personnel who were held as prisoners of war or listed as missing in action, for their service and sacrifice on behalf of the United States and to thank and honor the families of these veterans.               - Highlight the service of the armed forces during the Vietnam War and the contributions of federal agencies and governmental and non-governmental organizations that served with, or in support of, the armed forces.              - Pay tribute to the contributions made on the home front by the people of the United States during the Vietnam War.              - Highlight the advances in technology, science, and medicine related to the military research conducted during the Vietnam War.              - Recognize the contributions and sacrifices made by the allies of the United States during the Vietnam War.                 DoD representatives will coordinate with other federal agencies, veteran groups, state, local government and non-government organizations for their input in Vietnam War commemoration activities. Pensacola Drill January 2010 - After Action Report

A good time was had by all at the Det 4 4th MarDiv Drill at the Pensacola Naval Air Station. The Det met on Friday night at the O'Club. Retired Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps Spyder Nyland and his wife Brenda were welcome additions to the group.  John Wilkes was the only Marine to be observed doing a virtual reality Dead Bug. One sad note - June Homan's mother died while they were in Pensacola, so they had to leave the drill. Our prayers are with them.



The visit to the Naval Air Museum was great. The plane on the right was flown by zoomies George Braun, Ivan Zimmer, and Jim Homan in combat.

Jim Homan flew in the A-6 in the Museum, making him a Museum Piece.  George Braun arrived late, (airplane problems), but just in time to brief us on the F8 and F4, which he drove in Vietnam.  His airplanes are also now Museum artifacts. George was later observed doing virtual reality carrier quals. 


Lunch was at the Museum in the reconstructed Cubi Point O' Club which was evacuated from the Phillipines by Drew Davis and his Battalion (another Det Museum Piece).  The 3D movie on military aviation, and dinner at MacGuires were great. Drew and Margaret Davis and Craig and Phyllis Wood hosted brunch at the generals quarters. General Davis taught us a new Steelthrust Dice game developed to teach Generals about Strategy. The game involved deep thinking and strategy and big winnings - no photos were taken to protect the guilty.
